Adding parking sensors

I'm a newbie, so apologies if I have put this in the wrong place. I cannot post new topics yet, so have latched on to this one about parking sensors.

 

I have a 2000 Mk1 2.3 Ghia (petrol). It did not have parking sensors. I does now, I bought them on e-Bay for less than

I will be installing rear parking sensors to my 2001 Bamma during the next week. Can I ask if you positioned your sensors in the lower part of the rear bumper as in the standard manufacturers installation (the black plastic bit) or in the coloured bumber which will take the sensors a bit higher?. Do you get any false indications from your towing gear?

Fitted some to my 04 LX this morning and to say I am well pleased would be an understatement :blink:

 

I was having a similar problem with threading the wires until I found a large grommet/plug under the carpet just to the left of the spare wheel nut. took the wires through here and under the carpet to the right hand compartment. If you take the wires to the o/s compartment you can see a connector which includes the main feed to the reversing lights (thick black/blue wire on mine).

 

Take a look....

 

 

I bought some which came in blue and I cannot believe how close a match to my colour - Shadow Blue.

 

 

I have earned so many brownie points I don't know what to do with them all!!!!!

Looking to get a set but unsure about buying them off ebay when you can get them fitted at halfords.

The ones of Ebay look pretty easy to fit but know that it can sometimes turn into a nightmare.

I found them pretty easy to fit - most of the time was taken in making sure I was happy with the positioning as that bottom section of the rear bumper is profiled and I wanted to be happy I had identified the flattest parts before drilling. Bit scary at first but once I had drilled the first hole I was off and running.

 

As with Crispy Crystal, I wasted a lot of time looking for a way to get the wires into the boot space. If you prise off the plastic cover which lays across the boot (that which covers the boot latch) and lift the carpet up slightly to the left of the spare wheel mechanism you will see a grommet through which to bring the wires.

 

Also behind the bumper are some eyelets so I fixed the wires neatly along the back of bumper to one central point before taken them to the grommet - this was there are no wires trailing or that would interfere with the spare wheel.

 

I reckon the whole job can be done in under an hour.

Hi, I bought some sensors a couple of weeks ago but have been reluctant to fit them because of them sensing the towbar and "sounding off".

What distances from the centre of bumper is recommended to prevent this "sounding off".

I have read elsewhere in this forum that they can be blanked off with tape but that seems to defeat the object of a four rear sensors.

Sorry Phillip, cant help as my Gal doesn't have a towbar.

 

The set I bought of eBay recommended 40cm max between sensors. I don't know what angle they detect at. I measured the factory fit on a MkII Ghia and the middle two were 46cm apart.

 

Only suggestion I have would be to wire only one to the unit and lie the boot with the car in reverse (parked - not moving!). Hold the sensor against the bumper and move it inwards until it goes off due to the tow bar. That will give you a rough idea on the angle it works at.

 

Only warning is you would have to move it away further from that point as when you fit it properly it will move closer to the bumper and therefore pick up more of the towbar.

 

Does your unit only work if all four are fitted?

I've had my silver Gal for just over a week and am very happy with how it looks except that the parking sensors are black, so look out of place. Crispy mentioned that his kit suggested thay could be painted over, but that he was sceptical. Has nayone done this as I would be very keen to match them up to the silver?

Phillip, not that this will help you with your aftermarket sensors, I have a towbar and have never had problems with them sounding off as the factory fit ones are "intelligent" and recognise the ball as a permanent obstruction and therefore ignore it. I recollect that the distance settings can be adjusted using VAG COM. Are there settings you can adjust with yours?

 

Quite funny when I reverse because when I get the steady tone the towbars an inch away from an obstruction ..... get some funny looks from drivers who are sat in there car and stationary ..... :(

got my parking sensors on e bay front and back they are the wirerles kind ie the display unite that shows how close you are to somthing picks up the signale wirerlesly but the aerial is inside the unit and it doesnt pick up the signal so put a longer bit of wire in it work ok now

I've had aftermarket parking sensors fitted. Their very good for guiding me when parking with another car or wall behind me. Other than that they are not much good - they go off when reversing down gravel tracks, and when i reverse my trailer - ugh i want to kill them. If you can i'd definatelyget a switch fitted where you can turn them off when reversing a trailer, that way you won't get a headache!

Hi all. Have had my mark 2 for about 2 weeks now. Being an LX, it didn't have sensors fitted. really like the idea of the electromagnetic strip for front and back.

Few questions : did all the aftermarket guys fit the switch for the front ones independantly, or did you use one of the blanks in the centre console ?

Would prefer to do this, as neater.

Also, did you use an original switch, or just drill a hole and fit a pushbutton/toggle type thru the blank ?

Finally, did you put the control unit at the back, near the jack, where the reversing light cct can be accessed ? was wiring up to the front easy, or did you go for the wireless models?

Am looking for the electromagnetic type, but wireless fit. Haven't found this yet on the 'bay !!

Any help appreciated.

Ok, one more question, then I'll stop annoying you all ! This is for those people who went for the electromagnetic type. Did you fit to a MK2, and did you have to remove the bumper to fit the antenna ?

Great thread people, I have a 2003 Galaxy TDI LX, purchased today ;) and I am going to fit parking sensors I got from eBay.

So, I invested in a parking sensor kit and attempted to fit them yesterday. I removed the bumper and after drilling the first hole realised that I have a problem.

 

The sensor is around 1 and a quarter inches deep and as the bumper bar sits about an inch behind the plastic cover, the sensor will not sit flush. Wish I had fitted them to the base of the bumper and not the centre now :25:

 

Anyone know where I can get some super shallow sensors from or else I will be fitting the centre sensors lower than the outer ones.
